Description
Oceanides refers to the part-human, part-sea creature 'sea nymphs' of Greek mythology. The two figures represent joyful bathers in the sun and sea, luxuriating in the beauty of ocean. They reflect the exuberant energy and playfulness that the Greek philosophers called ‘the laughter of the gods’. The original sculpture was donated to Manly Council by Rosemary Eather in 2004 in memory of her parents who, as nearby residents, enjoyed the view of this sculpture from their window.

In 2016, the original scultpure was destroyed by a storm and a community effort was organised to commission the artist to recreate the sculpture in bronze. Part of the fundraising involved making small marquettes to sell to the public to finance the commission. One marquette was donated to Manly Art Gallery & Museum, see asset A1380.

Helen Leete's work can be found in The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, Macquarie University Sculpture Park, Kuringai Art Centre and Gallery 460 Sculpture Park, Gosford and internationally.
