Description
First Nations Public Art team mili mili were commissioned to create a public artwork at McKillop Park at Freshwater headland as part of the Coast Walk Public Art project.

Signal Fire is inspired by the fires lit by Aboriginal people along the coast since the beginning of time. From one headland to the next along the east coast, a complex system of communication signified births, deaths, hunting, corroboree and danger.

Images of banksia grown from this Country are burned into the seating deck to represent the way fire was carried from one place to the next using the banksia cone.

The artwork is nestled in Country and pays resepect to this remarkable area that has been inhabited for tens of thousands of years.

The work provides a framing and unfolding of the landscape through its timber structure. In the middle of the structure is timber seating where the community can watch, listen, reflect and come together into the future.
